Orange Crush CRX
When the Honda CRX was released in 1984, it was an immediate success with the import compact tuner set. With Wide aftermarket support, Honda reliability and an affordable price tag, the CRX hit the streets with a Vengeance and continues to be a winner at shows and racing events across the country.
One prime example of a CRX project that was taken to the next level is Chris Van Den Elzen’s 1989 Honda CRX HF. Starting with the performance side of things, it was decided the 1.5L D15B2 needed to be swapped out for Something with a bigger displacement and more power. That’s when a Chevy 355 (.30 bored Chevy 350), and an Turbo 350 tranny w/ B&m Shift Kit along with overnight truckload’s worth of supporting performance parts from, consisting of a set of double humped heads decked .10, a set of 10.5:1 compression pistons, some GM heavy duty Rods, a polished crankshaft, Edelbrock torker intake manifold to make things breath better, Holley 650 cfm carb To keep the juices flowing while keeping an excellent air to fuel mixture, the Edelbrock intake and filter were Custom powder coated purple, a set of Moroso Valve covers which were powder coated orange to brighten things up Under the hood. The fire for this rocket comes courtesy of an Accel distributor and wires. To keep things cool while putting the pedal to the metal a Procomp. Electric water pump comes into play along with a 3 row chevelle Aluminum radiator with twin electric fans. To let the fumes out a set of Shorty Headers into a custom exhaust keep things sounding grade A. To keep this beast of a motor from going anywhere is a set Moroso solid engine Mounts mated to custom mounts.
With the CRX putting down just serious HP and TQ to the ground with its new setup, a set of MK3 supra front And rear brakes was installed to slow things down.MK3 supra independent rear end assembly, along with a MK3 Supra front cross member and steering rack, Custom sub frame ran from the front to back of the car connecting the
Body to the front cross member, rear end, roll bar, and transmission to help keep the car in check through the Twistys, while 17×7 gramlight 57pro Wheels wrapped in kuhmo ecsta asx 225/45/17 tires were used to supply the CRX with pavement contact.
With the power side of the build handled, it was time to customize the interior and exterior of the CRX more Than Lil’ Jon’s grill. A Chrysler SRT-8 Burnt orange paint job, Custom formed and molded fiberglass scoop to Clear air filter, the front was fitted with a 91 Style crx front bumper with Mazda mx-3 front lip, the sides Were taken care of with a set of Custom fit and fiberglass tuner 2 side skirts from a prelude, the rear end got Some lovin’ curiosity of a Custom fiber glassed rear add-on and exhaust cover along with a Wings west rear wing, For some finishing touches Civic std. passenger mirror block off plate, & shaved lower door molding were Completed. And a Stock dash with modified gauges from cyberdyne, Fiberglass cobra style racing seats and 4 point harness
Attached to a Custom 6 point roll bar with Stock crx rear panels and cargo cover along with a B&M zgate shifter, The battery was relocated to under the dash, Custom carpet, new panels, He also Fiber glassed the bottom side of The door panels and painted them, Micro suede was added on the top side of door panels and the headliner to push The CRX up a notch aesthetically.
These mods, coupled with Chris’s personal touches, have taken the CRX to a point that its Honda’s Engineering Parents could have never thought possible. We think they would be proud.
