Tour De LISC
Cancer – everyone has been touched by it in one way or another. Charity – something I like to think we all would participate in, especially when given the opportunity. More than 1,500 people lose their battle with Cancer every day. New cancer diagnoses are made at a rate of over twice that number daily. In December of 2007, I started a small online discussion about the possibility of doing a charity drive with the Long Island Subaru Club (LISC), with proceeds being donated to the American Cancer
Society (ACS). Due to overwhelming positive feedback and support, the idea for the first annual Tour de Lisc was born. The group grew so quickly, and became so large, that my original caravan map and route simply would not work on the crowded streets of Long Island. The route was simplified and an end point at a local park that would accommodate a large crowd, with a celebration BBQ, was planned. Sunday, April 27th 2008: Our first year’s event was a success. Despite the rainy weather, over 100 cars showed with all participants giving generous donations. Total proceeds collected and donated to ACS was just over $2,300. The seed was planted and I knew this event could only continue to get bigger and better.Fast forward one year later to Sunday, May 17th 2009: the second annual Tour de LISc. With over 180 cars and nearly $6,000 raised in donations, Tour de LISC ver.2 was a giant success. Our list of supporters grew to include over a dozen vendors. A new, fun addition to this year’s event was our live raffle, with winners walking away with everything from SPT keychains to a Cobb Accessport with a tune.My hopes for next year’s event is to encourage more people to reach out to their local community, to friends and to family to raise more donations. I hope to extend the invitation to include other regional Subaru clubs and car enthusiasts. Our common interest in our cars and the people that drive them can unite us on a common front against the battle with Cancer.
